The title of this just about sums it up. Almost. Our Bolts almost got back to the AFC Championship game. They almost had the greatest comeback in a single season after starting 4-8. They almost proved all the doubters wrong. Almost. As the saying goes, “almost only counts if you are you playing horseshoes or hand-grenades”. Unfortunately, the Chargers weren’t playing either.
In a season that began with our own SuperChargers as one of the preseason favorites to win it all, we came to find out that they couldn’t win games by just showing up on Sundays. It was definitely proof that anything could happen on any given Sunday. Right off the bat, our belief in our team was tested: a heartbreaking last-play defeat, the loss of Shawne Merriman, and a devastating blown call by the buffest official in all of sports. How would we respond the rest of the year? It can be best described by a quote from the movie “Friday”…the scene where Pops (John Witherspoon) tells Craig (Ice Cube), “You win some, you lose some…but you live to fight another day”. The Chargers did exactly that. They won games they should have lost. And lost some games they should have won. Through all the trials and tribulations, the Chargers always managed to find a way to pick themselves up off the mat, dust themselves off and showed glimmers of who we thought they were.
At season’s end, eight wins was enough to get into the post season. The Bolts were matched up against the hottest team in the NFL entering the playoffs, the Colts, fresh off 10 straight victories, one of which was yet another last play loss of ours. The newly crowned MVP in Peyton Manning turned out to be “that guy who got picked before Ryan Leaf”. I’m not sure how to explain it, other than the Chargers are the Colts’ kryptonite. If only we could figure a way to face the Colts in the AFC Championship, then we’d definitely make it to the SuperBowl!
The Charger season came to end in Blitzburg. So let’s give credit where credit is due. The Steelers did what they had to do to beat us, hats off to them. They absolutely took it to us in that forgettable 3rd Quarter. Show me a team that will win a game while having the ball for a single play in an entire quarter? Might be hard find one, impossible? No. Unlikely? Probably. Let’s just hope the Steelers don’t become OUR kryptonite. I thought about the loss hard and long. I have a difficult time shaking the third quarter. So I came up with another way to break it down. This is what i come up with:
Chargers lost 35-24…11 points. Let’s say the football gods say we can erase the 3rd quarter. So now throw the 3rd quarter out the window. (Steelers 7, Chargers 0). 4 points…Where did those 4 points come from? Right before halftime. The defense gave up the touchdown(7), which was much more hurtful than a field goal(3)…
Now we can only wonder “what if”. Now that we are our of the running for a ring this year, who do we want to win? The team that beat us, that will now be going for their 6th championship? Or the team that has the new stadium and a chance for their first Lombardi Trophy? Either way, I know I’m hating on them all. I’m not afraid to admit that I’ll be jealous regardless.
I want to end this 2008-09 season by saying, do whatever needs to be done to keep LT here! Do whatever needs to be done to improve the D. Lights, it will be SO nice to see you back, that should help out the D in a big way. Last, but not least, AJ Smith…the ball is in your court, the is your Ron Burgundy moment. What are you do? The classy thing? Or are you gonna tell us to go F— ourselves?

25|Jan|2009 1Good Shit JR! AJ is on a power trip and he needs to be stopped. He displayed it when he got rid of Marty. A 14-2 Coach his last yearin SD. A coach Beloved by his players and his staff. He got rid of Donnie Edwards. A player with 152 and 142 tackles over his last two years. And if not for Lights out, probably the inspriational leader of the defense if not the entire team. And to what end has this gotten the Chargers. Yes we were playoff bound, yet lacking people and players that possibly could have taken us over the top. And here we are in 2009. AJ finally believes he has the trump card over LT since he has been injured over the last two years. AJ’s Power and ego have been snowballing and spirally out of control. Dean needs to find his Brass Balls and fire AJ before this Organization loses its grip not only on the AFC West, But the entire AFC as well.
