So this is what it must feel like to be a Raider fan: Losing. 0-2. Last Place. Having BS calls made against you.
Last week at this time, I was already over the last second loss. But this one stings a whole lot more. After a very forgettable first half: Down by as much as 18. The defense giving up 31 points. LT not playing much. And the “technical difficulties” with the replay machine…the Chargers still came all the way back to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat…only to have it taken back and handed to the Broncos, gift wrapped AND on a silver platter.
There is really no point to bring up anything that happened the first 59 1/2 minutes of game play, because everything that happened then, the Bolts overcame it. (Let’s be real Charger fans, don’t forget a couple years ago, we were the beneficiaries of “technical difficulties” on an instant replay malfunction). The only that we can really say is how bad of a call Ed Hochuli made. (It has to rank up there with other historic blown calls i.e. Game 6-1985 World Series, and Game 6-1988 NBA Finals) I give him credit for admitting he was wrong, right then and there. There was no cover up. For that he deserves forgiveness. Should he get fired? No. Should he get suspended? No. Fined? Not even that. His admission was the first step in making amends. How about a public apology? That would be perfect, but highly unlikely.
No matter how you look at it. It was a fumble. It came out of his hand before his arm was moving forward. However, that is not how Hochuli saw it. He ruled it an incomplete pass. But this is what gets me…Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt, and let’s even concede that it was a pass. The ball went backwards, which by rule is also a fumble. And to hear the explaination after all that, it just made me sick to my stomach. It was like that commercial where the referee is apologizing for blowing a call, and say he will made it up in the second half. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a make up call. If he really wanted to make it right, they could have thrown a flag for pass interference or illegal contact on the hail mary throw.
But like we say “a win is a win”, now we have to say “a loss is a loss”. We just have to overcome it. We have to put it behind us. We have move forward. We have to back our guys. We have to rise up. We have to believe.
It’s a steep hill to climb. But like the oldie but goodie goes “Ain’t no mountain high enough”. Check yourself, did you rock your Charger gear today? I know I did. After being 5-5 last year, I guaranteed 11-5 (check the archives) I will do it again….12-4, and nobody is going to want to play the Bolts in the playoffs…Now let’s just hope I don’t have to eat crow over this.
